By the beginning of my second decade on this project, I had fallen behind and done a bit of traveling out of order. I had skipped the ninth and tenth states (alphabetically, Florida and Georgia) and jumped straight to the eleventh (Hawaii). One road trip that included both these two neighbors would set things right. So, after nearly a year at a new job in Washington, DC with no vacation, I treated myself to a long road trip with my dog to celebrate the holidays. On a chilly day in late December, I packed up my car in northern Virginia, put in a CD recording of John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and drove eight hours due south into the night until I got to beautiful Savannah in the wee morning hours.
A wonderful adventure in Georgia had begun, one that would require three passes at the state to really explore it. Let’s take this one day at a time . . .
